Kid-Friendly on Lake Michigan

Endless freshwater views. Bonfire pits primed for s’mores. The most charming downtown filled with quaint shops and diners. Hikes galore. Ice cream aplenty.

It’s as if Northern Michigan’s Traverse City tumbled out of a family-friendly dream. Between its natural bounty – impressive sand dunes, wooded trails, miles upon miles of shoreline and inland beaches, and rolling peninsulas dotted with vineyards – and an array of alluring attractions, it truly seems to have something for everyone.

In summer, the region shines brightest, but the off season can be lovely too, as we discovered over a quiet two-day stay this spring.

WHERE TO STAY:
If like us, you’re looking for an Airbnb or vacation rental that’s well suited for young families, you’ll appreciate the thoughtfulness that’s gone into the Traverse City Cedar House. Outfitted with little ones in mind, this three-bedroom lakefront property offers a playroom, stone beachfront, fully fenced-in backyard with swing set and bonfire pit, a selection of toys and books, as well as a travel crib, highchair, child gate, and more.

It’s location – a 15-minute drive from downtown – is convenient, offering easy access and proximity to everything the area has to offer. But trust me, you’ll want to ensure you’ve got plenty of time to comfortably lounge in the chic and modern home, on the deck overlooking the waterfront, and by the backyard bonfire, too.

For larger groups, check out our review on the gorgeous Lakemore Retreat rental home, or for small families or couples, consider a stay at the dreamy Fernhaus cabin rental in Elk Rapids.

WHAT TO DO:
The allure of Traverse City just might be that it really has something for everyone. An adorable downtown full of boutique shops and great restaurants, stretches of sandy beaches, hiking trails, and a bevy of wineries and breweries to settle in at for an afternoon of slow sips.

Summer season is… chef’s kiss. But spring and fall are full of wonderful memory-making opportunities without the chaos of crowds. And winter opens up a whole slew of snowy sport activities at nearby ski slopes and among snowmobile trails.

Exploring Outside
Old Mission State Park and Lighthouse – Just beside the lighthouse, you’ll find a beautiful beach with large rocks spotting the shallow shoreline, creating a perfect space for kids to hop about and parents to relax.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore – The Dunes Hiking Trail offers dune after dune that stretches to the Lake Michigan shores in a 3.5-mile route. It’s a long hike – and sand isn’t always easy to walk on! – so make sure you’ve got proper shoes and hydration. Seek out one of many alternative trails if you’re looking for something suitable for the littlest ones.
Clinch Park – The city’s most popular beach, which offers close access to food and drink options, restrooms and wide swatch of sand to stretch out on and enjoy the bay views.

Boyne SkyBridge – Just over an hour drive away, make a day trip to walk out over this 1,200-foot-long suspension bridge (tickets required) and grab a bite at the Food Truck

Vineyards
Traveling with little ones isn’t always conducive to winery or brewery stops, but it’d be unfair to not mention our favorites since they make up such a part of Traverse City’s travel culture.

Bonobo Winery – A bright, airy and modern vineyard and tasting room owned by HGTV’s Carter Oosterhouse
Brys Estate – A moody and luxe tasting room for sampling sips like their popular Sauvignon Blanc
Mari Vineyards – The best part of this large property is the expansive lawn and adirondack chairs; perfect for kids to enjoy while you indulge
Jolly Pumpkin – Unique and sour ales alongside great pizza in a casual environment
Short’s Brewery Pull Barn – A few minutes away in Elk Rapids, a casual outdoor experience with picnic tables and food trucks
